THE YEAR 1853: LOWELL AND THOREAU

‘In the late summer of 1853,’ wrote the American critic and editor Charles Shain, ‘two leading members of the most illustrious generation of literary men New England has ever produced went to Maine in search of material. Each was on a visit to that special part of the New England territory, the Maine wilderness, and Maine’s symbolic animal, the outlandish moose.’6 James Russell Lowell came first, and arrived at Greenville on Moosehead Lake on 13 August. Henry David Thoreau arrived in Bangor almost exactly a month later, on 14 September; this was his second venture into the territory. As Shain points out, for the citified Lowell and other men of letters, Maine provided the New England equivalent of the Wild West, with moose in place of buffalo.

Both Lowell and Thoreau published articles about their adventures: Lowell published his in a recently established literary journal, Putnam’s, published in New York; Thoreau’s piece appeared in a Boston journal, also new, the Atlantic Monthly. (The editor of Atlantic Monthly was one James Russell Lowell.) Lowell wrote:
